- Pattern cuts and border pieces should be covered with a waste factor.

Formula
- Patio area = patio length x patio width.
- Paver area = paver width x paver height converted to square feet.
- Pavers needed = patio area divided by paver area.
- Pavers with waste = pavers needed x (1 + waste factor).
Example calculation
Example: 10 x 10 patio
A 10 ft by 10 ft patio using 12 in by 12 in pavers needs 100 pavers before waste and 105 pavers with 5% waste.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting base gravel and bedding sand are separate materials.
- Using nominal paver size when the actual size differs.
- Not increasing waste for diagonal or running-bond patterns.
